A business headshot is meant to show you and your personality to your customers and business relations. Unlike an actor's headshot, you don't need to present the "raw you." The pictures still need to be an accurate representation of what you look like, but this time as you would like to present yourself to a client or customer for the first time.

Here are some guidelines for preparing for your shoot:

Hair

Your hairstyle should be as you wear it on a daily basis. It should not require a hairstylist to achieve. Your hair should be presentable, so if it’s unruly, consider getting a haircut at least several days before your shoot.

Makeup

Remember, a headshot is supposed to look like you. Heavy or elaborate makeup should not become the subject of the photo: you are the subject. If you normally wear makeup, then you should wear makeup for the shoot. Keep it as simple as you can.

Clothing

Your clothing should not be distracting. It should not draw the eye from the true subject, you. Do not wear clothes with patterns or pastel colors. Black and white should also be avoided. Try to select colors that compliment your skin tone.

If you have an article of clothing you believe you look really good in, bring it to the shoot even if it doesn’t meet the above criteria.

Likewise, do not wear jewelry that will distract from your face.

Preparation

Prior to your shoot, make sure you review your appearance. Check your eyebrows, etc., to see if plucking is needed.  It should be done a couple of days before the shoot to avoid redness in those areas.

Make sure your hands and nails look good in case they wind up in a shot.

Your teeth should be ready for a smile. Consider having them whitened if you feel they are discolored.

Within the days before your shoot, try to avoid too much sunlight. Try to avoid drinking too much alcohol as it will make you look puffy or bloated. Try and stay well hydrated.

The night before your shoot make sure to lay out your clothes and whatever else you might need the next day. Also, make sure that your cloths are free of lint or pet hair.

Be sure to have a light meal before arriving. You will need you energy for the shoot.
