A headshot is a representation of what you look like in person. It is not a glamor shot. The purpose is to let casting directors see what you look like. Your headshot lets the director see if you have the look they are looking for.

Here are some guidelines for preparing for your shoot:

Hair

Your hairstyle should be simple. It should not require a hairstylist to achieve. Your hair should be presentable, so if it’s unruly, consider getting a haircut at least several days before your shoot.

Makeup

Remember, a headshot is supposed to look like you. Heavy or elaborate makeup should not become the subject of the photo: you are the subject. If you feel some makeup is necessary, use a light hand and go for a natural look.

Clothing

Your clothing should not be distracting. It should not draw the eye from the true subject, you. Do not wear clothes with patterns or pastel colors. Black and white should also be avoided. Try to select colors that compliment your skin tone.

If you have an article of clothing you believe you look really good in, bring it to the shoot even if it doesn’t meet the above criteria.

Likewise, do not wear jewelry that will distract from your face.

Do not wear a costume. Remember, the subject is meant to be the real you.

Preparation

Prior to your shoot, make sure you review your appearance. Check your eyebrows, etc., to see if plucking is needed.  It should be done a couple of days before the shoot to avoid redness in those areas.

Make sure your hands and nails look good in case they wind up in a shot.

Your teeth should be ready for a smile. Consider having them whitened if you feel they are discolored.

Within the days before your shoot, try to avoid too much sunlight. Try to avoid drinking too much alcohol as it will make you look puffy or bloated. Try and stay well hydrated.

The night before your shoot make sure to lay out your clothes and whatever else you might need the next day. Also, make sure that your cloths are free of lint or pet hair.

Be sure to have a light meal before arriving. You will need you energy for the shoot.
